This family has connections with Melbury Sampford in Dorset [map] and Kilmington in Somerset (now in Wiltshire) [map] and is most notably for including the Earls of Ilchester. Stephen Fox (1704-1776) was awarded the title Baron Ilchester of Ilchester & Strangways of Woodsford Strangways in 1741 by King George II. This was followed by Lord of Ilchester & Stavordale, Baron of Redlynch in 1747 and finally Earl of Ilchester in 1756. The first Earl added his wife’s mother’s maiden name to become Fox-Strangways in 1758. [Coat of Arms]

Melbury House and Park in Dorset is a private property described by English Heritiage - “Melbury House was enlarged in about 1530 for Sir Giles Strangways, and enlarged and remodeled again in 1692 by (John) Watson for Sir Thomas Strangways. Additions were made in 1872 by Anthony Salvin for the 5th Earl of Ilchester, and further additions by G Devey in 1884-1885. Late 20th century restoration was undertaken by Bertram and Fell.”

“The stables to north were built in the late 17th century, with additions in 1801-1802 by John Brettingham. There is a hexagonal turret 30 metres to the west which originated in the 16th century and was altered in about 1762. There are 18th century walled kitchen gardens 120 metres west of house. The chapel of St Mary, 60 metres to east-south-east, forms a visual part of the landscape scheme. Lion Lodge, with the late 17th century Lion Gates, lies to south of house. Chetnole Lodge, built in 1870, is sited 900 metres to the north-east of the house.” [No longer owned by the family]

The family also “have long held the village and entire estate of Abbotsbury [map]. They have been a much landed and influential family in Dorset for many centuries. ... the parish church of St. Nicholas ... dates from the 14th century at the earliest with later additions. The pulpit has two bullet holes fired during the civil war in 1644. After this event, Sir John Strangways, owner of the Abbey lands, was imprisoned in the church tower.”

“Just out of the village are the sub tropical gardens. The gardens form part of the land of the now demolished Abbotsbury Castle. Elizabeth, Countess of Ilchester built the first castle in 1765 and laid out the gardens. The gardens continued to be added to by Henry Fox-Strangways, the 3rd Earl of Ilchester around 1808. The next Earl, William Fox-Strangways, a botanist and being much travelled about Europe introduced many more plant species.”
