Outline Family Origins - London

Two separate family trees with no known connections. But one of these London families was thought to include the founder of a well-known restaurant. J Sheekey is a restaurant in central London with its origin commonly quoted as being -

“In 1896 Lord Salisbury (grandfather of the current Lord Cranbourne) granted Josef Sheekey permission to serve fish and seafood in his new building development in St Martin's Court on condition that he supplied meals to Lord Salisbury's after theatre dinner parties. Josef Sheekey had become known to the Earl through his seafood stall in Shepherd's Market.”

No personal details of the founder, or subsequent owners, were shown and the only clue picked up from the restaurant’s background information was “It was probably most famous during the fifties and sixties under the ownership of the formidable Mrs Williams, granddaughter of Josef Sheekey”.

In 2011 a diner at the restaurant was told by staff that Sheekey was a replacement surname for Siekowski - and Josef was in fact from Poland [thanks to Mark for that update - and apologies if the Polish surname is misspelt]. But since then a number of people have cast doubt on this explanation. In 2012 a new book called “J Sheekey - Fish” was published but added nothing that would help resolving the family connections. And today there are hundreds of web pages with Josef Sheekey references but almost all seem to have just done a cut and paste from the original story.

Which William?

As well as the 2 x Matilda and 2 x James there are also 2 x William...
One married Rosetta May M Holbrook in 1920 at West Ham. Another married Lilian May Laker in 1923 at Mile End. The most likely births of suitable Williams are - June Qtr 1896 and December Qtr 1898 both in Mile End. Both appear in the 1911 Census. But which William married which bride? see details...
However in November 2012 the Independent published a report that included comments from Allan Jenkins, editor of Observer Food Monthly. “We learn from him [Jenkins] that the original J Sheekey's was Josef, though no one knows his nationality ... Beyond that, says Jenkins, the history is a little sketchy. "On the day the book was published, I heard from Martin Fielding, the son of Leslie Fielding, who was manager of Sheekey's in its 25-year heyday, from 1947 to 1972. Leslie was the nephew of Josef's daughter Mrs Emmy Williams, a formidable matriarch.”

Now from a family historian’s point of view there are a few problems here. The most obvious being that searching the usual sources turns up nothing at all for a Josef Sheekey - not even a death registration or an entry in the 1901 Census. However the report in the Independent does change some key points. First Mrs Williams now has a first name, second she is now the daughter, not granddaughter, of Josef and third we have a nephew called Leslie Fielding. This may now be enough to identify Josef ...
