Josef - or Joseph - Sheekey?

As per the earlier reference there has been doubt over the origins of the founder of the J Sheekey restaurant in central London.

But as a result of the clues arising from the latest book, the increases in online information and the work of other researchers it is now possible to draw up a family tree with a degree of confidence.

First we have this marriage of Joseph Sheekey to Emily Mary Cooper in 1889 -

Note that Joseph is an oyster opener - and the son of Charles.

Second we have this baptism entry for Emily Matilda Sheekey daughter of Joseph and Emily Mary in 1891 -

And Joseph is now an oyster barman.

About six years later there is a school entry for Emily Matilda Sheekey, daughter of Joseph, that gives her birth date as 20 July 1891.

And in the December Quarter of 1917 there is a marriage index entry for Emily M Sheekey marrying Sidney Williams in the St Martin’s district of London.

So this fits the few reported facts about Josef and his daughter Mrs Emmy Williams and leads to the conclusion that this should be the right family tree -

  • 1 Joseph Sheekey aka: Cheeky b: abt Feb 1870 Soho / Westminster, Middlesex d: 30 May 1922 22 Cranbourn Street, St Martin, London
  • . +Emily Mary Cooper b: abt 1872 Southwark, London m: 20 Oct 1889 St John the Evangelist, Walworth, London Father: Charles Cooper Mother: Emma x
  • ... 2 Elizabeth Emma Sheekey b: abt Jun 1890 14 Broad Wall, St Saviour, London d: abt Aug 1890 St Saviour, London
  • ... 2 Emily Matilda Sheekey b: 20 Jul 1891 16 Broad Wall, St Saviour, London d: Jul 1975 Highgate, Islington, Middlesex
  • ...... +Sidney Williams b: abt 1893 Upper Edmonton, Middlesex m: abt Nov 1917 St Martin, London Father: James Williams Mother: Edith Musgrove
  • ........ 3 Kenneth J Williams b: abt Nov 1919 St Martin, London d: abt Nov 1919
  • ........ 3 Peggy M Williams b: abt Feb 1921 St Martin, London
  • ........... +Lawrence E Walton aka: Dalton? b: abt 1920 m: abt Aug 1944 Westminster, London

And if this is correct then we can guess that Joseph’s father is the Charles Sheekey that married Emma Bavister in 1861 and died in 1888 - the year before Joseph’s wedding.

Other researchers have found that Sidney Williams’ sister, Mabel, married Albert Edgar Fielding and had a son Leslie Claud Fielding (1920-1979) - so that also fits in with the November 2012 newspaper report. And kills off completely the Polish story ... in my humble opinion
