Strangways of Ireland

This family has not yet been traced back to any of the various English family lines. However there is family belief that they share a common ancestry and coat of arms with the earliest Strangeway generations.
The arms also have this reference - Copy of confirmation of arms to the descendants of William Strangways, son of James Strangways, Sovereign of Callan, son of John Strangways, etc. all of Suttonsrath, Co. Kilkenny, Nov.5, 1896. (http://sources.nli.ie/Record/MS_UR_060646)
Callan was a medieval borough by prescription, with charters and grants from the reigns of Edward III, Richard II and Henry IV. Its corporation comprised a sovereign and an unidentified number of burgesses and freemen. The officers were a sovereign, two bailiffs and a town clerk.
Taking the family tree below one possibility is that this William S Strangways is William Sealy (Ceely) Strangways and thus links to the Bull-Strangways family tree. But this is unlikely as there is other evidence for the family being in Ireland for many earlier generations.
One statement of earlier Irish settlement is - The Strangways had been in Kilkenny for almost 300 years when his daughter Wilhelmina married (in 1856 according to a history of the Robertson family) and before that the family had been in Lancashire.
Another - Member of an old Co Kilkenny family at Suttonsrath (townland of 223 acres), parish of Odagh, co Kilkenny descended from James Strangeways a Freeman of Dublin in 1667.
And in 1818 there is a letter that confirms James as the father of William (1788-1859) - Letter from James Strangways, magistrate for counties Kilkenny and Tipperary, Callan, County Kilkenny, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition requesting a post of employment for his son. Request is made in petition on behalf of son Lieutenant William Strangways, of 3rd Garrison Battalion, who served under the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsula, for post of Barrack Master at Belturbet, County Cavan, or any other vacancy. Also encloses copy of certificate of support for the conduct of James Strangways as a magistrate, signed by 38 inhabitants of Kilkenny.

As with all these family trees there are likely to be errors and gaps - since few (no?) family trees are ever complete or provide the fully detailed story of something as complex as a family’s history . And it is impossible to wait until all the details are confirmed before publishing what fragments are known about a family tree - since family trees will always have gaps.
