John Peyton Jones (1809-1891)

John is reported in several sources as being bom at Ardnaglas Castle, County Sligo. However the only matching baptism record found is for Lydd in Kent. He was the son of Captain Lewis Tobias Jones and Mary Gerrish (nee Gray). His family originated in Denbighshire but had gone to Ardnaglas during the Commonwealth. His brothers included Admiral Sir Lewis Tobias Jones, Captain Loftus Francis Jones and Jeremy Jones who is also recorded as being christened at Lydd - but in 1802. [And there is a marriage for a Jeremy Jones of Lydd to Louisa Lyde Furnival Fillis on 21 Mar 1834 at Alverstoke. This is thought to be the same Jeremy Jones].

John joined the 63rd King's Own 1st Manchester Regiment and arrived, with the regimental head quarters staff, at Hobart Town, Tasmania [then Van Diemen’s Land] on 16-Jul-1830 on the "S. Medway". [other reports say 1829]

He became a captain and was appointed in charge of a military party at Eagle Hawk Neck. On his initiative a line of guard dogs was established across the isthmus there to prevent the escape of convicts working in the saw-milling station at Stewards Harbour / Port Arthur. Between 1830 and 1877 Port Arthur was used as a high security prison.

Captain Jones remained there until 1831/2. His regiment left the colony in 1833/4 when he retired from military service in order to take up farming. He married Eliza Dumas, daughter of a Captain John Craig Dumas of his own regiment, on 20-Feb-1837.

He rented "Ivanhoe", a property in the New Norfolk district of Tasmania, in 1836. Then in 1839 he bought 716 acres in Cornwall County, Tasmania but remained living at "Ivanhoe" until 1841. He then gave up farming and was appointed by Governor Franklin as Police Magistrate at Westbury on 30-Jul-1841. He also went on to be Warden of Westbury for most years between 1863 and 1882.

Capt. Peyton Jones and Eliza had ten children, five sons and five daughters. The most interesting being their daughter Fanny (Frances Loftus born 26 Apr 1844) who married Dr. Joseph Hildreth Rockett in 1872.

Note - several published family trees give Fanny’s birth as 06 Jun 1842 but this was the birth date registered for their son Loftus Francis Jones. The confusion may have been caused by Fanny’s name being “improved” to Frances Loftus Jones later.
